Preaching from the Word
By J. Grant Swank, Jr.
Having preached sermons for nearly 40 years, I have tried the various sermonic forms and concluded that expository preaching—preaching directly from the Word—is best. Why? (more…)

Your Sermon Material
by Dennis Wiggs
Prayer and study give birth to sermons. The hours of heart and mind preparation should not satisfy just one sermon. The material should be typed or neatly printed and filed for future reference.
Almost every sermon a young preacher delivers will be his first. The ideas, interpretations, illustrations and outlines should be conserved. If you think you are busy now, be forewarned that the older you get, the busier you become. Prepare well now. The recorded material will benefit you the rest of your ministry. (more…)

A Marriage Survival Toolkit
By Eddie Moody
The divorce rate in the United States has remained stable over the past two decades, with half of all marriages ending in divorce. Nevada has the highest divorce rate followed by Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama and Oklahoma, all in the Bible Belt. All southern states except South Carolina exceeded the national average of 4.2 divorces per every 1,000 residents in 1998.
The lmpact of Divorce
There are many negative consequences of divorce. International studies indicate that people who divorce have a mortality rate ten times higher than people the same age who are married. Divorced people are also three times more likely to commit suicide.
Children in homes impacted by divorce also suffer. Several studies have detailed the impact divorce has on children’s grades and self-concept, but more troubling is the impact on children’s life expectancy. On average, children whose parents divorced die sooner than those from homes not impacted by divorce. (more…)

What Happened to Hell?
By Leroy Forlines
The two most awesome thoughts that have ever crossed my mind are the thoughts of hell and atonement. lt is awesome that God takes sin so seriously that He pronounced on sinners the sentence of spending eternity in hell.
It is even more awesome to think that the holiness of God takes sin so seriously that if Jesus Christ was going to be our Savior, God’s justice required Him to suffer the full wrath of God for our sins. The justice of God would take no less from Jesus Christ than was required of us if He was going to take our place. That is awesome!
ln answering the question: What has happened to hell?, the answer is, “Nothing.” Hell was established by an immutable decree of God. Jesus tells us that the day is coming when He will say to sinners, ”Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels” (Matt. 25:4lb). (more…)

Let’s Keep It Simple
By J. Matthew Pinson
Free Will Baptists have always believed in freedom, simplicity and order in worship, in worshipping God in Spirit and in Truth. Thus we have been opposed to the employment of set forms and liturgies, as well as to undue emotionalism, in worship.
While some Free Will Baptists have expressed themselves in worship in a more emotional way, and some in a less emotional way-and while we have given each other that freedom-we have always agreed in our belief in the freedom, simplicity and order of Christian worship. (more…)

The Joy and Benefit of Series Preaching
By Jeff Cockrell
The story is told about a young preacher called to his first pastorate. The first Sunday he delivered a great message. Everyone praised their new pastor for such a wonderful message.
To their dismay, the next Sunday he preached the same message. Of course the church people became concerned and perplexed. When he preached the same message the third Sunday, the deacons decided to have a talk with their new pastor.
The deacons explained that they enjoyed him being their pastor, and that they understood he had some learning to do. The deacons asked, “But preacher, don’t you have more than just one sermon?” He responded, “Oh, yes! But you haven’t done anything about the first one yet.” (more…)
